An upcoming HBO series has been considered quite controversial ahead of its release. Now HBO has finally announced the official release date for the show.
The announcement, as shared in a brand-new teaser for the HBO show, reveals that the release date is in June. This means after only a few months – fans will finally be able to see the series.
Titled The Idol, the new series stars Lily-Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. The series was co-created by Sam Levinson, Reza Fahim, and Tesfaye. It’s the show’s production history, however, that has so many viewers anxious and curious for the project.
The show initially began filming in November 2021. And production continued until April 2022. At this point, the series is said to have gone through a “creative overhaul,” as shared via Deadline. They add that both director and executive producer Amy Seimetz left the project. Sam Levinson took over as a director on the project, and in addition to rewriting the story, a majority of the show was reshot.
It appears that co-creator and star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye is the reason behind these changes. Specifically because, as revealed via IndieWire, he felt that The Idol was “leaning too much into a female perspective.” He also felt that his character was being portrayed as something like a cult leader. As such, the series now works more as a love story, while the original vision was to feature Lily-Rose Depp’s character deal with a predatory industry figure.
