The most news we’ve had about the RoboCop franchise is that a direct sequel to the original film, titled RoboCop Returns, was in development. Now that Amazon has acquired the MGM library, however, those plans seem to have changed. RoboCop is one of the MGM titles that now belongs to Amazon – and they reportedly want to reboot it with a television series.
As shared via Deadline, Amazon Studios is looking at the RoboCop brand in addition to several other MGM franchises to revive. Interestingly, not only do they mention the possibility of a television series, but they note that Amazon could want to pursue a new film project as well.
Here’s what was shared:
“For the past year, since the deal closed in March 2022, Amazon Studios has been sifting through MGM’s library, identifying about a dozen initial titles for film and/or TV development, including Robocop, Stargate, Legally Blonde, Fame, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Pink Panther and The Thomas Crown Affair.”
Furthermore:
“Robocop also is being talked about for both film and TV, with a TV show possibly first, Deadline hears.”
Of course, RoboCop has been adapted for the small screen before. In fact, many fans will recall that we’ve had both two animated RoboCop shows and a live-action RoboCop series. So, with that in mind, it isn’t much of a surprise to see that Amazon would want to pursue that route for the character. Though many fans have certainly been intrigued to see what the theoretical RoboCop Returns had to offer the franchise.
The film would have followed the events of the original RoboCop while ignoring its original two sequels. Additionally, the film would have ignored the 2014 remake, which was not a hit with fans. As such, we’ll have to wait and see what comes of the franchise now that Amazon is in charge.
