It’s no secret that technology is advancing at an alarming rate. We’ve already seen AI make a massive jump in speed and accuracy with additions like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Now the AI technology is being implemented in a robot named Ameca.
As such, social media users are being surprised by Ameca, a robot with incredible lingual abilities via AI that was designed by UK startup Engineered Arts. The robot features a number of realistic facial expressions created with 17 motors placed inside her head. Of course, the most impressive feat is how Ameca manages to speak a number of different languages.
Ameca, as shared via NY Post, used OpenAI’s GPT-3 to show off its language capabilities. A researcher asked the robot during a tutorial if Ameca “can speak a lot of different languages.”
After pausing for a moment, Ameca gave the following response:
“Yes, that is true. I can speak many languages, including German, English, French, Japanese, Chinese and much more.”
They further describe Ameca’s incredible skills as shown in the tutorial:
“The researcher then has her demonstrate her fluency by rattling off an intricate Japanese tongue-twister twice without slipping and then telling people what the weather is like in Beijing using Mandarin, as well as providing the New York forecast in ‘American English.'”
Here’s what some users commented on the video shared below:
“I love the little detail of her looking up when she’s processing, like humans do!”
“Absolutely incredible … Could you imagine having one of these at your house?”
“Stunning! I’ve been waiting all of my adult life to see a humanoid robot like Ameca become a reality! My only question is, “Does Ameca have the ability to walk yet, and if not, is there a general timeline as to when she will be able to walk? I can’t wait to see this happen!”
“Love how she looks up when she’s “thinking””
“It’s great when Ameca looks up and to the left when recalling information similar to how a human would. The lips and facial movements seem delayed a bit when speaking. Maybe delay the audio a bit so the lips and facial movements can catch up so they appear in better sync?”
Some left more pessimistic comments:
“This is amazing and scary at the same time.”
“I really wish that this was still just scifi but I guess everyone will have a personal robot in the future which is sad and exciting at the same time.”

It’s certainly fascinating to see how far technology has come. Of course, this is only the beginning for these types of programs and robotics – so stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any other developments as we have them.
