Scarlett Johansson is often a topic of discussion by Marvel fans for her role as Black Widow. However, it’s another film that has HBO Max subscribers talking lately. And this one project is much weirder than any Marvel movie.
The movie was recently trending on the Top 10 at HBO Max. As mentioned, though, it happens to be a rather weird one. The film is actually a blend of horror and sci-fi. This makes for a particularly different type of outing for Johansson, especially given that it’s a 2013 release from A24 no less.
The film, titled Under the Skin, was actually a box office flop upon its release. Though that might not be surprising coming from A24. Their films are often divisive after premiering. But a decade later – horror and sci-fi fans are finally rediscovering this film on HBO Max. Many of them are unsettled by the film yet have nothing but praise to give. Of course, given the premise involves Johannson as an alien threat called “The Female” that searches for human prey, the reactions are quite appropriate.
Here are some of the responses from viewers who streamed the film on HBO Max:

1: Under the Skin. Should be mentioned in the same breath as 2001 A Space Odyssey. Transformative, scary, profound experience. pic.twitter.com/zd1S78AHCF

Under the Skin. Haunting, melancholic, horrifying and Scarlett Johansson’s best performance that I’ve seen. Wonder if it influenced Get Out at all? pic.twitter.com/eO2d9h7PTn

Under the skin (or something like that) with Scarlet Johansson. Creepy, uncomfortable, icky, unsettling flick.

Fair bit of dialogue in Under The Skin, not necessarily by Scarlet Johansson but by members of the public and non actors.🏴 https://t.co/d6A8pmfT6t

I just saw Under the Skin recently and I’ve got so many questions, maybe in part because I don’t think HBO Max ‘s description was accurate or helpful.

One of my most favourite, unsettling, esoteric and flat our weird horror films, ‘Under the Skin’ was released across the UK on this day in 2014.
If you enjoy a creepy movie that doesn’t spoon feed you it’s plot, this could be for you.

It’s great to see that the streaming service has allowed so many new eyes to see Under the Skin. It’s always unfortunate when a daring film takes a risk and seems to fail at the box office. But with a little time and the right distribution – a film can always make a comeback.
And, as we’ve seen in the streaming era, this tends to happen more often than not these days. So for that reason alone – it’s nice that Under the Skin was able to battle its way to the Top 10 on WB’s streaming service. It isn’t exactly easy, but given Scarlett Johansson’s popularity and the allure of extraterrestrial horror, it makes sense that it’d find an audience eventually.
