The Star Wars film franchise will continue after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The 2019 Star Wars sequel is receiving a follow-up in a very interesting way. It’s been revealed that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey for the new movie. Furthermore, it’s being set fifteen years into the future.
It was previously reported that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was attached to direct a Star Wars movie. The film’s screenwriter was announced as Steven Knight. Now we know that this is the new follow-up featuring Rey, as announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 via Deadline.
Many plot details about the follow-up are being kept under wraps. For now, though, it’s been revealed that Daisy Ridley as Rey will be rebuilding a new Jedi Order in the sequel. And with fifteen years since The Rise of Skywalker, there’s certainly a lot that could have changed, so it’ll be exciting to see what’s on the way in that regard.
As of this writing, Daisy Ridley is the only confirmed cast member, but that could change soon. It’s possible that fans will have the opportunity to see other fan-favorite characters make a return as well. And, after the divisive reception for The Rise of Skywalker, no doubt fans are eager to see how this new film wraps up some of those story elements.
Interestingly, this is only one of three new Star Wars films just announced. Each of the new films is set in a different time period of the beloved universe. It’s an exciting time for the past, present, and future of the galaxy far, far away.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Star Wars updates as we have them. We should have more details regarding Daisy Ridley and her role in the newly-announced follow-up soon. And, of course, updates for all of the other Star Wars projects currently in production.
