The first Evil Dead Rise reactions are here. The highly-anticipated horror film just had its premiere at SXSW. Now critics at the event are reacting on social media – and their responses are extremely positive!
The Evil Dead film franchise has gone through several iterations over the decades. There’s the original trilogy featuring Ash Williams, a 2013 remake, and a television series which followed the events of the former. Now the franchise is back with an all-new horror story set in a Los Angeles apartment complex.
Of course, some fans were nervous about having yet another new story set in the franchise. But according to critics – they’ll have nothing to worry about. Evil Dead Rise is being praised for its dark tone and use of blood and gore. Obviously it seems like everything an Evil Dead fan could want.
Here are some of the reviews which have surfaced on Twitter:
EVIL DEAD RISE carries Sam Raimi’s spirit while still bringing fresh ideas to the table. The kills kick ass and it’s going to shock even the most dedicated fans.
It’s not as comedic as previous films and sticks to a harsher tone, making it stand out in the franchise. #SXSW pic.twitter.com/mWbN3Pm9aX

Holy mother of hell. Evil Dead Rise is nasty and gnarly as fuck, it LITERALLY RIPS. Continues the style and tone of the 2013 remake, while offering some neat twists. Lee Cronin is a directing force, but it’s Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland who lead this carnage circus #SXSW pic.twitter.com/nwtMBSr2tM

EVIL DEAD RISE: It’s been a minute since a total gorefest like this was dropped in theaters. Claustrophobic, grimey and mean as hell, this new entry is a crowd-pleaser that gets straight to the violence. Will 100% make you wince at parts. #SXSW2023 pic.twitter.com/ane5CK6N6i

“Mommy’s with the maggots now.” Every single Evil Dead movie is a banger, and the tradition continues with Evil Dead Rise. A bond between sisters shredded by a disgusting whirlwind of Deadites, guts, and gore. Brought the entire house down at #SXSW. pic.twitter.com/SxDwEUO5tD

Evil Dead Rise is rad! The tone falls somewhere between the 2013 remake and Evil Dead 2, there’s so much gore, and even more child endangerment. Also, there’s a nod to The Shining that had me applauding in my seat. Don’t miss it. pic.twitter.com/ZjJktb0Zxt

Evil Dead Rise is the total smorgasbord of gore, possession, laughs, and style you would come to expect. Its more adjacent to the 2013 remake and I dug it. pic.twitter.com/xfJc6NSYJY

EVIL DEAD RISE is as unrelenting as the remake but as crowd-pleasing as the Raimi movies. It has a darkly comic spring in its step even as it’s serving up the most extreme imagery the franchise has ever offered. Goodness, it’s so gooey.

The way Lee Cronin takes to EVIL DEAD RISE and not only honors the franchise so goddamn well but makes the sequel his own is fucking phenomenal. Get excited. Done for now (until my review). #SXSW

It looks like Evil Dead Rise will be yet another hit for the long-running franchise. Although general audiences will have to wait until late April to see the film in theaters – this certainly bodes well for anyone that had mixed feelings. With that said, there were certain doubts about the 2013 remake once upon a time, and now that film is considered by many to be even greater than the original. Now we’ll just have to see where Evil Dead Rise fits. Though if the first reactions to Evil Dead Rise are any indication – then it could very well become another contender for the franchise fan-favorite.
Lee Cronin directed the film while original Evil Dead veterans Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert Tapert produced the film.
The film’s cast includes Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, as well as Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Mia Challis, and Nell Fisher.
Fans can currently expect Evil Dead Rise to be released exclusively in theaters on April 21, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
