Ridley Scott is currently working on Gladiator 2 for a 2024 release date. The long-awaited sequel will follow the events of the 2000 film Gladiator. As such, the cast is finally coming together, with Barry Keoghan now in talks to join Gladiator 2.
The news comes via THR. Fans will recall that Keoghan previously played the Joker for a small role in The Batman. Now it looks like he could have a similar role as the villain in Gladiator 2.
Here’s what they were able to share:
“Barry Keoghan, the Oscar-nominated actor who is right at home in a good period piece, is in talks to join Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott’s untitled Gladiator sequel.”
As for his potential role in the film:
“If a deal makes, Keoghan will play a character named Emperor Geta.”
They add that Emperor Geta was indeed the name of a real-life Roman emperor. But, because the film isn’t being based on true events, it doesn’t seem like the film will tie itself to the historical figure. Nevertheless, with his growing portfolio including The Batman and Eternals, Keoghan is certainly an exciting choice to play the villain of Gladiator 2.
The cast of the film will be led by Paul Mescal. It’s been stated that he’ll be playing Lucius in the film. His character will be an adult version of Lucilla’s son from the first Gladiator movie. He was also the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s character Commodus.
Ridley Scott will return to direct the sequel which was penned by David Scarpa. The crew will also include several key members from the first film’s production. John Mathieson will return as director of photography, Arthur Max will return as production designer, and Janty Yates will return as costume designer.
Gladiator 2 is currently scheduled to be released on November 22, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the highly-anticipated sequel as we have them.
