The newest installment in the Scream film franchise is here. And, as you’d expect, the film offers plenty of twists and turns throughout its runtime. Thus the ending of Scream VI is quite the surprise once everything comes together.
Naturally, there are spoilers ahead, but we’ve broken down the ending of Scream VI. The new film offers a more complex climax than its predecessors – so it’s worth taking a moment to process everything. For those who haven’t seen the film yet, definitely give it a watch before diving in.
As for the film’s ending, here we go:
The climax of the film takes place at the Ghostface shrine which contains elements from all previous films of the franchise. It’s the perfect setting for the killer’s reveal. And, as it turns out, this film features three surprising killers. This is a first for the franchise which previously only included two killers per film, and the exception of Scream 3 which included only one.
The three killers of Scream VI happen to be Dermot Mulroney’s Detective Bailey, Liana Liberato’s Quinn Bailey, and Jack Champion’s Ethan Landry. It turns out that all three characters are actually related to Jack Quaid’s serial killer character, Richie Kirsche, from last year’s Scream. The familial connection also mirrors the reveal of Scream 2 where Billy’s mother, Nancy Loomis, turns out to be one of the killers.
The group manage to impair Chad Meeks-Martin and Kirby Reed, forcing both Sam Carpenter and Tara Carpenter to fend for themselves. They manage to successfully kill both Quinn and Ethan – with Detective Bailey becoming injured and blacking out. He awakens just long enough to be taunted by Sam, who now dons her dead father’s Ghostface outfit, and she manages to kill him.
It’s then revealed that Chad and Kirby have survived the events, as well as Mindy Meeks-Martin who greets the group outside. Sam’s boyfriend Danny Brackett is likewise happy to see his friends okay. As Sam and Tara then walk into the city, Sam takes a moment to look at her father’s Ghostface mask. She seems tempted by it – but ultimately throws it to the ground. Sam then follows Tara the rest of the way and the film ends.
It’s a mostly happy ending for the film. Especially with the killers having once again been thwarted. But as fans of this franchise know all too well by this point – there’s always the chance that more copycat killers could strike.
Scream VI was directed by 2022 Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence. James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick also returned to write the screenplay. Scream creator Kevin Williamson executive produced alongside Radio Silence member Chad Villella. Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre of Spyglass were also attached as executive producers.
The ensemble cast for the film includes Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Dermot Mulroney. Additionally, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, and Henry Czerny also appear in the film. Courteney Cox reprises her role as Gale Weathers while Hayden Panettiere returns as Kirby Reed for the first time since Scream 4.
