Many horror fans are ecstatic to see a horror-influenced version of Winnie the Pooh. Of course, other fans of the character are less than pleased with seeing an innocent anthropomorphic bear turned into a murderer. It’s now been revealed that some of these Winnie the Pooh fans have delivered death threats to the creator of the upcoming horror film.
Rhys Frake-Waterfield, the writer and director of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, has revealed his death threats while speaking with Agence France-Press. As shared via CBR, it appears that fans have taken a multitude of paths to try and have the film stopped.
Here’s what he shared:
“I’ve had petitions to stop it. I’ve had death threats. I’ve had people saying they called the police,” he explained.
Sadly, many toxic fans have used the internet as a place to spread inexcusable hatred and vile comments. And though they may seem more apparent with the extent of social media today – it hasn’t stopped filmmakers like Rhys Frake-Waterfield from attempting to pursue their vision. As such, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is still happening, and it doesn’t matter how many petitions or death threats are being made in an effort to stop it.
In fact, the director already has plans for a sequel and several other horror-influenced versions of beloved characters. This includes films being based on both Peter Pan and Bambi. Thus we’ll have to see what happens with these properties in the near future.
Rhys Frake-Waterfield both wrote and directed the horror film from a screenplay inspired from the public domain characters created by A.A. Milne.
The cast of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey includes Amber Doig-Thorne, Maria Taylor, and Danielle Scott.
Fans can currently see Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey in theaters. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the highly-anticipated horror film and its upcoming sequel as we have them.
