It was previously revealed that actor Paul Mescal had entered talks to star in a Gladiator sequel. Now a release date for the Gladiator sequel has been officially set by Paramount.
As shared via Deadline, fans can now expect the Gladiator sequel to hit theaters as soon as next year. This is exciting news for those eager to see where Ridley Scott, director of the original Gladiator film, plans to take this continuation. Interestingly, rather than focus on Russell Crowe’s character Maximus, the new film will follow Lucius.
This particular character appeared in the first film as the nephew of Commodus. When Maximus saved him and his mother, Lucilla, by battling Commodus in the gladiator ring – it left a large impression on the young child. Now the sequel will take place years later with Lucius as an adult. It’s certainly an intriguing hook for a new story. Especially one that takes place all these years after the first film was released.
Here’s the specific release date for the Gladiator sequel:
“Paramount has just dated the Ridley Scott-directed follow-up for November 22, 2024.”
Hopefully this means that production on the highly-anticipated sequel will begin soon. As such, we should have additional details regarding the film’s cast and plot soon. For now, fans can find solace in the fact that production on this long-awaited sequel is finally going to happen.
Ridley Scott will return to direct the sequel which was penned by David Scarpa. Scott will also produce, along with Scott Free President Michael Pruss as well as Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max are both attached to return from their work on the original film.
