The Toy Story film franchise has remained a financial and critical success over the decades. Now with four main films under its belt – the Toy Story franchise is gearing up for Toy Story 5.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the new sequel during the company’s Q1 earnings call. This news was shared via Deadline in addition to the announcement that Frozen and Zootopia are also getting new sequels.
Here’s what Bob Iger had to say:
“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia,” Iger began. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
Of course, Disney hasn’t had much success with their original animated films in recent years. Though some of this can be blamed on the COVID-19 pandemic and how that impacted their release strategy. Nevertheless, it appears that their new goal depends on bringing audiences back to theaters with some of their biggest franchises.
The latest installment in the Toy Story film series, Toy Story 4, earned $1.07 billion globally in 2019. The four films altogether have earned $3.03 billion at the box office globally. As such, it isn’t surprising that Bob Iger might want to have Toy Story 5 greenlit during his tenure.
Naturally, there aren’t any plot details available at this time. But Iger does tease that they’ll “have more to share about these productions soon.” Fans will recall that Toy Story 4 ended with Woody and Buzz going their own separate ways, with Woody choosing to stay with Bo Peep. One can only imagine where Toy Story 5 could take these characters next. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Toy Story 5 as we have them.
