Scream VI is set to premiere next month – and we’re already getting news that another ’90s slasher franchise is getting a revival. Specifically, it’s been revealed that a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer has entered development.
This news comes via Deadline. Additionally, for fans of the original film, they’ll be excited to know that both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to return. Similarly, Neal H. Moritz is in talks to return as producer, with Leah McKendrick attached to write the film’s screenplay. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is set to direct.
Naturally, plot details are scarce at the moment, but there’s plenty of hype surrounding the project. It’s been said that both Robinson and McKendrick pitched the idea for the film. Furthermore, it was a pitch that “blew away studio execs.” It appears that last year’s Scream left an impression with its legacy sequel formula.
It seems like Sony Pictures wants to respect the brand and craft a proper sequel. One that will act as a “passing of the torch.” As explained:
“Sony also saw it important to not reboot the franchise but do a sort of “passing of the torch”-type sequel where original castmembers are brought back as a new generation cast members are added to the ensemble, similar to films like Scream or Creed.”
Fortunately, both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are said to be “game” after having heard the same pitch for the film. It seems like this will be a sequel that fans of the original film will enjoy. As always, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional news regarding this I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel as we have it.
The original I Know What You Did Last Summer film was released in 1997. A sequel followed soon after with both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in 1998. A third film with an entirely new cast, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was released in 2006. This will be the first feature film released in the years since.
