The Exorcist remains one of the most iconic horror films ever made. Now David Gordon Green, director of the three most recent Halloween films, is attached to direct an all-new sequel reboot. Production is currently underway and it’s been revealed that Lidya Jewett has joined the cast for the upcoming Exorcist film.
This news comes via Deadline. They noted that production for the film took a break in December. However, with a release date scheduled for later this year, production has started up once again.
Now we know Lidya Jewett will be starring in the Exorcist project alongside the likes of Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd. The cast also includes Ellen Burstyn – who starred in the original 1973 film as Chris MacNeil. This marks her first return to the Exorcist franchise which has spawned several films, a television series, and even video games in the years since.
Indeed, David Gordon Green’s upcoming film will be a brand-new sequel. As such, fans are excited to see where the story could go, especially given that there are three films in the mix. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon as production on the first film of the trilogy continues.
David Gordon Green penned the screenplay for the sequel alongside Peter Sattler. The story was created by Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green.
Jason Blum will produce the film via Blumhouse. David Robinson and James Robinson will produce via Morgan Creek. Green, McBride, and Couper Samuelson are attached as executive producers. Meanwhile, Ryan Turek is overseeing the project for Blumhouse.
The first installment of David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist trilogy is set to be released on October 13, 2023.
