Anne Hathaway has celebrated quite the career over the decades. Now 40-year-old Anne Hathaway has revealed a disturbing interview question she faced at age 16.
As shared by Variety, Anne Hathaway recently participated in a Q&A for her upcoming film Eileen. It was there that Anne Hathaway recounted the interview with one of the very first questions she faced at the beginning of her career. Unfortunately, it was one that left a negative impression.
Here’s the question that she was asked at the time:
“I just remembered one of the very first questions I ever got asked when I started acting and had to do press was,” she began.
“‘Are you a good girl or a bad girl?’”
She continued by explaining her reaction to the question and how her performance in the upcoming film Eileen is the answer she wanted to give back then:
“I was 16. And my 16-year-old self wanted to respond with this film.”
It was after she saw William Oldroyd’s film Lady MacBeth that she wanted to sign up for his film Eileen. It appears that Lady MacBeth illustrated to Hathaway how Oldroyd’s work can capture “female complication” and that he “could be trusted to tell complicated stories.”
“I thought it was an extraordinary work,” Hathaway said. “I saw a study of female complication that hit me really, really deep, and I felt like Will was a filmmaker that could be trusted to tell complicated stories, especially about females.”
In addition to Anne Hathaway, Thomasin McKenzie also stars in the film.
The screenplay for Eileen was penned by Ottessa Moshfegh, who wrote the novel of the same name, along with co-writer Luke Goebel.
The release date for Anne Hathaway’s upcoming film Eileen is currently unknown. As such, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for further updates on her career and the film Eileen as we have them.
