Today was the big day that many DC comic book fans and general movie fans have been waiting for. The new era of the DC Universe is about to begin, and the heads of DC Studios are beginning to lay out their plans for the future, and it seems like The Flash will be the start of it.
Late last year, James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-CEO’s of Warner Bros. DC division and set all their efforts to putting the chaos in order. Their plan for what would happen next for DC movies, TV, and video games were kept under wraps – though Gunn hopped on Twitter occasionally to keep a lot of rumors in check. That included Henry Cavill’s role as Superman and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s involvement with DC Studios.
One such person that has yet to be mentioned a whole lot recently was Ezra Miller’s Flash, but now we have more of an idea of what is to come of the character. The Andy Muschietti-directed The Flash was set to premiere in November last year but was pushed back to June 2023 – and it’s now confirmed that The Flash will have a crucial part in the future of DC Studios’ projects.
Gunn states, “A fantastic movie that I really love, that resets the entire DC Universe,” today during DC Universe: Chapter 1 announcement video.
A critical factor in the story is the status of the Blue Beetle movie. The film is still in production, and many wondered if the plot will connect to the new DC Universe or even be canceled. Gunn noted that other 2023 releases, specifically Blue Beetle, are “totally disconnected.” Yet, the upcoming Superman movie, Superman: Legacy, will officially be the kicking-off point for the DC Universe moving forward.
Gunn said, “The one thing that we can promise is that everything from Superman forward, from our first project forward, will be canon and will be connected” when announcing the new Superman movie. The Co-CEO continues, “We’re using some actors from the past. We’re not using other actors from the past, but everything from that moment forward will be connected and consistent.”
Gunn didn’t go into detail about which “actors from the past” DC Studios will use – so it’s anybody’s guess at this point.
