The Tomb Raider video game franchise is being adapted yet again. This time as a live-action series for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming platform. Additionally, it’s been revealed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to write the Tomb Raider series.
This news comes via THR, and revealed that it’s part of an ongoing deal between Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Amazon. This means that she’s also attached to the series as an executive producer alongside Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt.
It’s worth noting that, despite her acting career, Phoebe Waller-Bridge does not have plans to portray adventurer Lara Croft in the film. This is interesting considering that she is, however, acting in the upcoming adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
As such, it’s unclear who could be playing Lara Croft in this upcoming iteration. The character was previously portrayed in live-action by Angelina Jolie for two films released in 2001 and 2003. The role was later played by Alicia Vikander in a 2018 film reboot.
And, to that extent, it looks like the continuity established by that 2018 film is over. The brand will be rebooted altogether with this upcoming live-action Prime Video series. Though there’s also an animated Tomb Raider series in the works at Netflix. This particular project has Hayley Atwell attached as the voice of Lara Croft. Previous voice actors for the character in the video game world include Camilla Luddington, Keeley Hawes and Minnie Driver.
It goes to show that Tomb Raider remains a lucrative brand even though the first game was released in 1996. Hopefully we’ll have more news about this live-action series in the near future. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on the growing Tomb Raider franchise as we have them. For now, however, it looks like we can expect to see some exciting Tomb Raider scripts penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
