Marvel’s latest comic book series featuring The Punisher has greatly reinvented the character. Now this has led to a major moment where The Punisher actually rejects his own classic skull logo.
The series ditched the iconic logo early on. It was part of a new arc where Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, joined The Hand and gained new powers. Additionally, he wore a new symbol as a result, though it does retain some similarities with its predecessor.
The new Punisher logo does feature a skull – though it appears to be of an Oni variety. At a time when real-world figures have controversially adopted Frank Castle’s original logo as their own, Marvel Comics made the decision to reinvent the symbol and the character.
As such, the latest issue of the series culminates in the aforementioned major moment where Castle rejects his original logo. Frank Castle makes this decision after fighting Ares in Punisher #9. It just so happens that The Hand and the Apostles of Ares are at war with one another. As such, Punisher and Ares begin to battle one another, and Castle wins.
It just so happens that Ares, however, had The Punisher’s logo adorned on his own armor. So when Castle beats Ares – he takes off said armor – and incinerates it. As a result, Frank Castle watches as his original logo burns by his own hand. It’s certainly a major moment for the character and one that concludes his reinvention.
Of course, some fans might not be pleased with the route that Frank Castle has taken. Others, however, are embracing this reinvention. So perhaps we’ll see more of this version of The Punisher in the near future.
Jason Aaron wrote the series with artwork from Paul Azaceta and Jesus Saiz.
