Fans of Gossip Girl were excited to see the series rebooted for HBO Max. Unfortunately, it’s now been revealed that HBO Max has cancelled the series with its second season.
This means that a third season will not be released on the streaming service. However, there’s still a chance that Gossip Girl could continue on another platform. Showrunner Joshua Safran revealed as much on social media.
Here’s what he shared about the cancellation of Gossip Girl and a possible new home for the series elsewhere:
“So here’s the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce GOSSIP GIRL will not be continuing on HBO Max,” he began.
“We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill [battle], and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs. Thank you for watching, and I hope you’ll tune into the finale next Thursday to see how it all comes together.”

Additionally, as shared via EW, an HBO Max spokesperson also commented on the cancellation. Despite their decision to cancel the series, they note that HBO Max is still very grateful to the team behind Gossip Girl.
“We are very grateful to Josh Safran, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for bringing us back to the Upper East Side and all the scandals at Constance Billard. Although we are not moving forward with a third season of Gossip Girl, we thank them for the enticing love triangles, calculated backstabbing and impeccable fashion this series brought to a new audience.”
Of course, HBO Max has been undergoing plenty of cancellations in light of Warner Bros merging with Discovery. It’s likely that we’ll continue seeing these changes happen at the major streaming service. As always, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
The original Gossip Girl series aired from 2007 to 2012 on The CW. Its creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, returned for the reboot on HBO Max.
