As of this writing, the new horror film M3GAN has already made $90.1 million worldwide. These are winning box office numbers for the sci-fi horror project and, as one might expect from the genre, it means a sequel is normally a given – and that appears to be the case with M3gan 2.0.
Of course, the film had such strong expectations that a sequel was in talks as far back as November. But as revealed via THR, a sequel is now official and has a release date of January 17th, 2025. It will be written by Akela Cooper, who wrote the first film.
The report also notes Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, who starred in the first and survived to tell the tale, are onboard to return.
Interestingly, producer James Wan had suggested that a sequel appeared to be in the cards. Here’s what he had to say in a playful and excited Facebook post earlier this month:
“Jason Blum and myself are beyond thankful and grateful to see how much love M3GAN is receiving, and hopefully what all this means is that we get the chance to explore the bigger world of A.I. and perhaps witness – M3gan’s Revenge????”
In the meantime, fans can see the first M3GAN film which is currently playing in theaters. It’s always great to see an original horror villain have the opportunity to become an icon.
The new film was directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper. The story for the film was created by Akela Cooper and James Wan.
The cast for the film includes Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten.
