It doesn’t take much to get on Twitter’s bad side. Now filmmaker Edgar Wright is experiencing this after having just directed a new McDonald’s commercial.
Edgar Wright is known for a variety of films, including the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, which is comprised of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. He also notably directed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the action film Baby Driver. Obviously, he isn’t known for his work in commercials.
As such, Twitter users have compiled a number of responses to his newly-released McDonald’s commercial. Many directors have taken the time to direct commercials as a secondary source of income. So, with that in mind, it isn’t exactly strange for Wright to take the job. But that hasn’t stopped complaints from piling in.
Here are some of the negative responses to the McDonald’s commercial directed by Edgar Wright:

that Edgar Wright McDonald’s commercial sucked ass, no bones about it, doesn’t make me want a mcchicken or nuggets or fries. I liked Soho but man, I hope his The Running Man gets him back in the zone

On the other hand, there are quite a few Twitter users who supported Wright. They understand the factors that likely went into his decision. After all, sometimes you have to simply take the job that’s offered to you.
Are people really mad at Edgar Wright for directing a McDonald’s commercial?
Years ago I was a P.A. on a shampoo commercial directed by David Lynch. Was it a weird Lynchian shampoo commercial? No. It was exactly like very shampoo commercial ever. Just a director doing his job

Film Twitter is pretending like Edgar Wright getting paid a couple million to spend a day making a Super Bowl commercial is something they personally would have turned down on principle https://t.co/y9ol3aUvYn

Interestingly, Edgar Wright is actually credited as the director of two other commercials in the past. He directed a commercial for Squarespace in 2022 and one for Nike in 2018. So, having put that into perspective, perhaps it’s even less of a surprise than previously expected. Nevertheless, it probably won’t stop Twitter users from finding a reason to complain. But it’s likely that Edgar Wright won’t be bothered by any of them.
In fact, following the success of Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright is already working on several new projects. This includes a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man with Michael Bacall attached as the film’s screenwriter. Though it’s possible that Wright might throw fans another curveball – so stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates as we have them.
