The Netflix series Dahmer has received controversy for its usage of the titular real-life serial killer. Now a mother of one of his victims has become upset that the Dahmer series managed to win a Golden Globe award.
Actor Evan Peters, who portrays Jeffery Dahmer in the series, won a Golden Globe for his role. Of course, given that he’s playing a horrific real-life serial killer, some people felt that it was a little much. In fact, Shirley Hughes, mother of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes, expressed her outrage over the award.
She discussed her feelings with TMZ and how “this makes sick people thrive on the fame.” As her statement reveals:
“There’s a lot of sick people around the world,” she began. “People winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame.”
And, despite Evans noting in his acceptance speech that he “sincerely hope[s] some good came out of” the series, Hughes noted that there was no tribute from Evans for the real-life victims or their families. This only added to her outrage.
“It’s a shame that people can take our tragedy and make money. The victims never saw a cent. We go through these emotions every day,” Hughes added.
As mentioned above, the series has already received controversy in the past. This includes other family members related to Dahmer’s victims and viewers that felt the series was made in bad taste. Now that it’s won a Golden Globe award, however, it’s certainly taken things to the next level.
Nevertheless, Netflix has already renewed the series for two additional seasons. It remains to be seen how they’ll compensate for those upset by the first season – if at all.
American Horror Story actor Evan Peters stars in the first season of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story as the titular Jeffrey Dahmer. The cast of Dahmer also includes Niecy Nash, Penelope Ann Miller, Shaun J. Brown, Colin Ford, and Richard Jenkins.
