The long-awaited Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black is finally starting production. Now a first look at the film has been revealed.
As you can see below, Deadline shared the first look which reveals Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse. It’s been said that “the first audition for Abela blew away execs and [director] Taylor-Johnson and put her in the driver’s seat to land the role.”

Additionally, the Amy Winehouse Estate is in full support of the biopic. They released the following statement to express their excitement for the project:
“We are thrilled that Studiocanal, Focus Features and Monumental are making this movie celebrating our daughter Amy’s extraordinary music legacy and showcasing her talent in the way that it deserves,” the estate added.
The project has been in development for a few years now. There was a 2015 documentary from A24 titled Amy, which was considered a huge success, but Back to Black will be the first feature film to tell her story. With that in mind, fans of the late singer are no doubt excited, and we should hopefully have more news soon now that production has started. In the meantime, at least we have our first look at Marisa Abela in the film.
The biopic film Back to Black will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. He previously directed the biopic Nowhere Boy based on The Beatles star John Lennon in addition to the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey. The screenplay for the film was penned by Matt Greenhalgh.
As mentioned above, Marisa Abela is set to play Amy Winehouse in the film.
A release date for the biopic film has yet to be announced. However, given that production is only now beginning, it will likely be some time before we have those details. As such, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates as we have them.
