Many horror fans are enjoying the new sci-fi horror film M3GAN. Naturally, however, some viewers desired a little more violence than the PG-13 rating offered. As it turns out, M3GAN was initially “way gorier” according to its writer.
Akela Cooper, who wrote the screenplay for the film, revealed as much while speaking with the Los Angeles Times. Excitingly, she did reveal that an unrated version of the film appears to be in the works.
Here’s what she had to share:
“No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. There should be an unrated version at some point. … I heard it is on the books.”
She also revealed that the gorier version of the M3GAN script included a higher body count. As it turns out, producer James Wan requested that some of the characters be left alive.
But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie. It wasn’t a Gabriel [in ‘Malignant’]-scale massacre, but she did kill a bunch more people, including a couple of characters whom James was like, ‘I like what you did with those people, but I want them to live.’ I was merciless, but again, that is me. My humor is extremely dark.”
Fans are certainly fond of this year’s M3GAN. And, if an unrated of the film can be released, then it will likely gain even more attention and appreciation. Hopefully everything comes together. And, at the rate things are going, it looks like we could be getting a sequel to the film sooner rather than later.
The new film was directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerward Johnstone from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper. The story for the film was created by Akela Cooper and James Wan.
The cast for the film includes Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten.
M3GAN is currently playing in theaters. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on the killer doll movie as we have them.
