After a successful marketing campaign, the new horror film M3GAN is finally here. As such, we’ve taken the time to explain the ending of M3GAN and whether or not the titular character could return in a potential sequel.
The film revolves around Allison Williams’ character Gemma and her niece, Cady, played by Violet McGraw. Cady’s parents die in a car accident which forces Allison to take care of her niece. In an effort to connect with her, she gifts Cady with her brand-new creation, an artificially-intelligent doll named M3GAN.
As such, this sets the events of the film in motion. M3GAN begins to malfunction and takes her programming to protect Cady to all-new levels. The robot doll begins killing anyone that she considers a threat to Cady. Eventually, Gemma discovers her creation’s sinister motives, and realizes she must put a stop to the killer toy.
This leads to a final battle at Gemma’s house. As Gemma and M3GAN battle one another, Cady intervenes with an older robot creation of Gemma’s, allowing them a chance to destroy M3GAN’s computer core. Of course, as horror fans know, this is rarely ever the end for a potential icon.
As Gemma and Cady leave the house, Gemma’s smart home device appears to come to life. Viewers can only assume that M3GAN has taken control of the device. And, sooner or later, it seems likely that she could find a new physical body to continue her killing spree. Of course, we’ll have to wait for a potential sequel to see if that happens.
Fortunately, it has been teased that a sequel is already in the works. Reports of a sequel being developed go as far back as November. This seems to indicate a strong sense of confidence in the film. As such, depending on how it’s received by audiences, it seems more than likely that M3GAN 2 could happen sooner rather than later. Especially with the ending of the first M3GAN teasing all-new possibilities.
The new film was directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerward Johnstone from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper. The story for the film was created by Akela Cooper and James Wan.
The cast for the film includes Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten.
M3GAN is currently playing in theaters. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on the killer doll movie as we have them. If this release is successful enough – it certainly seems likely that we’ll have a M3GAN sequel on our hands.
