Many Titanic viewers have emphasized their belief that Jack could have survived the events of Titanic, only if Rose had let him onto her raft. Now James Cameron has settled this legendary Titanic argument once and for all with a scientific study.
James Cameron revealed as much while speaking with the Toronto Sun. It’s clear that Cameron has become very driven to prove that Jack had no other choice but to die in Titanic.
As James Cameron began:
“We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive a stake through its heart once and for all,” he stated.
The scientific study involved a hypothermia expert who went to great lengths to test the scenario. This included having two stunt people with the same body mass as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the actors who portrayed Jack and Rose in the film.
“We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie and we’re going to do a little special on it that comes out in February. We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over them and inside them and we put them in ice water and we tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was, there was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive.”
It’s certainly impressive to know the extent that the Avatar director was willing to go to prove his ending was correct. For any fans hoping that Cameron would have allowed Jack in other ways, however, they’ll be disappointed there as well. James Cameron assures fans that Jack “needed to die” in order for the romance to work.
“No, he needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality. The love is measured by the sacrifice,” he said emphatically.
“Maybe … maybe … after 25 years, I won’t have to deal with this anymore,” he finished with a laugh.
The scientific study involving the legendary Titanic argument will air on National Geographic next February. This release will coincide with the theatrical re-release of Titanic for Valentine’s Day.
