James Cameron is currently busy with the Avatar film series. However, it appears that hasn’t stopped James Cameron from discussing the possibility of a new Terminator movie.
He revealed as much while speaking with the “Smartless” podcast. Interestingly, his direction for the franchise would apparently move away from “bad robots gone crazy.”
Specifically, he’s more interested in the AI side of the equation. Here’s what he had to say:
“If I were to do another ‘Terminator‘ film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion but nothing’s been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy,” Cameron said.
Of course, fans will remember that James Cameron made his first return to the franchise just a few years ago. The 2019 film Terminator: Dark Fate was intended as a relaunch of the film series. It was also the first film to involve James Cameron since the release of Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 1991.
Unfortunately, the film wasn’t much of a hit with fans. In fact, the film outright flopped at the box office. Fans were clearly disappointed with the controversial direction that film took the franchise. As for James Cameron’s new idea, regarding a larger focus on AI, it’s possible that it could win fans over in a new way.
Nevertheless, Cameron was sure to mention that “nothing’s been decided” regarding a new Terminator film. As such, it’s also possible that we simply won’t be getting a new film. And with so many Avatar sequels in production, it’s probably the last thing on Cameron’s mind.
For anyone eager to have more Terminator action, however, there’s still some good news. Netflix previously ordered a Terminator anime series in 2021. Hopefully we’ll have details on that project sooner rather than later. As always, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
