It’s been unclear what would happen with the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise since Dead Men Tell No Tales was released in 2017. Now, however, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirms that there are new plans in place – and they involve a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.
He revealed as much while speaking with THR, explaining that they hope to introduce an all-new cast of younger actors for the new film. Additionally, this is a separate film than the previous Pirates project which would star Margot Robbie. Although Robbie herself claimed that the film would no longer be happening, Bruckheimer insists it is. Apparently they’re just taking their time making sure each film turns out properly.
Here’s what Bruckheimer shared, explaining that the reboot with the younger cast will likely happen before the Margot Robbie version:
“Oh God, they’re all hard. I think we’re getting very close on that one, too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them.”
As mentioned above, Margot Robbie previously claimed her Pirates film was dead. Jerry Bruckheimer explained more regarding that situation.
“It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.”
Of course, fans are most likely interested in whether or not Johnny Depp will return. As for now, it’s unclear. Bruckheimer was at least asked if Disney executives would be open to having Johnny Depp return:
“You’d have to ask them. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know. I would love to have him in the movie. He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.”
With that said, Johnny Depp previously claimed during his defamation trial that he felt “betrayed” and wouldn’t be returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Perhaps this is why Disney is examining their opportunities to merely reboot the franchise with new cast members. As such, we’ll just have to see how these projects continue to develop.
