It was previously revealed that Radio Silence, a filmmaking trio which includes Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella, were involved with a new Escape from New York film. Unfortunately, there weren’t many details at the time regarding whether or not it would be a sequel or something else. Now Radio Silence has confirmed their intentions to create an Escape from New York sequel.
As revealed while speaking with EW, they hope to make the film a sequel similar to Scream in 2022. As fans will recall, Scream took the franchise into a new direction while adhering to all four past films. It seems like they hope to do the same with the original Escape from New York and potentially its 1997 sequel, Escape from LA.
Here’s what they had to share:
“Not a remake. That’s one of those properties that you can’t [remake], it’s sort of untouchable to us, and lives in its own stratosphere in terms of how important it is to us, and how much we love it. So it’ll be not unlike Scream, I think, a nod to, and a continuation of, what we love about those characters and that world.”
One can only assume this means the return of Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. At this time, however, it looks like the project is in the “very early stages” of development. As stated:
“We’re very excited to be working with 20th Century on that. We’re developing our take, and hopefully, it will be going to script sometime in the New Year, and just really starting to lay the groundwork for that. But very early stages.”
With that in mind, fans will likely have to wait to see whether or not Kurt Russell will be involved. But this is certainly exciting news for anyone worried that the film would belong to a new continuity. Hopefully we’ll have more details regarding Radio Silence’s Escape from New York sequel to the John Carpenter classic soon. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates as we have them.
