The God of War franchise is as popular as ever. Now it’s been confirmed that Amazon Studios has officially ordered a live-action God of War series.
This news comes from Variety. They also revealed that Rafe Judkins is attached as the God of War series showrunner.
In addition to Judkins as showrunner and executive producer, the series also has Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby attached as writers and executive producers. Santa Monica Studio’s studio creative director, Cory Barlog, will also serve as an executive producer. Santa Monica Studio is the developer behind the video game franchise.
Additionally, he’ll be joined by Playstation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. The series also has Santa Monica Studio’s Jeff Ketcham as a co-executive producer.
Here’s what Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, had to share:
“’God of War’ is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Sanders began. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”
Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, shared her own statement:
“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” Pope states. “Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.”
Asad Quizilbash added the following:
“’God of War’ is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way.”
Hopefully we’ll have more details soon. The storyline is expected to follow the events of the 2018 video game God of War and its recently-released sequel, God of War: Ragnarok.
The God of War series is a co-production between Amazon Studios and Sony Picture Television in association with PlayStation Productions. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on the series as we have them.
