Top Gun: Maverick is one of those movies that many did not expect to be such a huge success. The film became a big hit over the blockbuster-filled summer with Tom Cruise’s return to one of his most prominent roles. Finishing its worldwide theatrical run that topped over a billion dollars, talks have been swirling that a third Top Gun might be in the works. The film was fantastic to watch on IMAX, and I’m sure many would throw their wallet at Tom Cruise if it guaranteed a Top Gun 3.
Fortunately, we won’t have to do that, as the filmmaker has hinted that a 3rd adventure featuring everyone’s favorite Ace pilot might happen.
At this year’s Deadline’s Contenders LA3C panel, Top Gun: Maverick director, Joseph Kosinski, spoke about the difficulty of filming the movie. Kosinski detailed how the actors were part of an intensive and painstaking training course to prepare for the film. Part of that preparation was the stunt work done in real-time.
During the talk, Kosinski mentioned a potential sequel.
“Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back? It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank. He’s not settling down.”
It makes sense for Top Gun 3 to be on the table. The film accumulated critical and commercial success, so much so that Paramount rereleased the film in IMAX not too long ago. Also, Tom Cruise isn’t a guy to say no when allowed to push the limit of action and filmmaking. The actor still has Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One that will showcase the wild stunts that Cruise is known for.
And let’s not forget that Cruise is slated to participate in a groundbreaking film shot in actual space. The stunt will make Hollywood history as the first actor to film on the International Space Station. There’s no word on when the movie star will be taking part in the journey (looking at you, Space X) but it’ll surely be another spectacle under the actor’s belt.
