The 1994 film Stargate spawned its own franchise including television shows, straight-to-video films, and even an animated series. Now discussions regarding a potential Stargate reboot are happening.
The Stargate brand is only one of numerous franchises that Amazon inherited after acquiring MGM. As such, it appears that certain parties have shown some interest in reviving the brand. This comes via Gateworld.net which specializes in all things Stargate in conjunction with YouTube channel Dial the Gate.
As they note in a new video, there are several individuals showing Amazon their interest in a Stargate reboot:
“Among those who reportedly have expressed interest in Stargate to Amazon are The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby …, the producers of another of Amazon’s fantasy hits, The Boys, as well as J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot.”
Additionally, marketing veteran Jenny Stiven had some interesting details to share while speaking with Darren Sumner (Gateworld) and David Read (Dial the Gate) about the potential reboot. As they explained:
“There was a call from Amazon Creative Studios for pitches from production companies, and it wasn’t specific to Stargate … One of the things that was done was they would say with certain production companies that they had either already worked with or were really excited about — like Mark Fergus and Hawk, his partner — ‘Hey, we loved what you’ve done. What would you like to do?’ And from my understanding, they said, ‘Stargate.'”
Jenny Stiven also revealed that Brad Wright was developing a Stargate pitch prior to MGM being sold to Amazon. As such, Amazon’s new ownership has now made his pitch less relevant. As Stiven puts it:
“When Brad wrote that script, it was appropriate for where MGM was at the time … What he wrote and what the series was going to be was appropriate to that particular setup — that equation. [Today] the variables aren’t just changed, they’re blown apart … HIs pilot, that series, was part of an equation that no longer exists.”
Although things aren’t moving in favor of Brad Wright’s pitch, it does seem like there’s plenty of interest in a Stargate reboot. Of course, that depends on which of these interested parties can convince Amazon to greenlight their pitch. Nevertheless, it looks like it’s only a matter of time before something on that front happens.
