It was previously revealed that Tobin Bell will be returning for the latest entry in the Saw franchise. Now, according to a new report, franchise star Shawnee Smith is also entering talks to return for Saw 10.
This report comes via Deadline. They’ve stated that she’s currently “circling the newest installment in the billion-dollar horror franchise” and note that the film “is currently in production in Mexico City.”
Obviously this is exciting news for the franchise. Shawnee Smith has been a major part of the franchise since her appearance in the original 2004 film as Amanda Young. Although she was initially introduced as a victim of Jigsaw, she was later revealed to have been an apprentice.
As of this writing, however, it’s unclear how exactly Shawnee Smith could fit into the plot of Saw 10. The same can be said for Tobin Bell as both characters were killed off during the events of Saw III. However, the franchise has previously utilized flashbacks to keep their characters part of the story – perhaps we’ll see a similar method used here.
Additionally, it was also revealed that the cast of Saw 10 will now include Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach. Although it’s unclear what characters these three will be playing in the film. Hopefully we’ll know more details about the cast in the near future.
Overall, this is shaping up to be a return to form for the franchise which has moved into some interesting directions over the years. Fans no doubt love the original Saw formula, however, so we’ll have to see how this very special tenth film continues to progress.
Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, will be directing this new installment of the franchise. He previously edited the first five Saw films as well in addition to Jigsaw.
This next installment in the Saw film franchise is currently scheduled to be released next year on October 27, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional Saw updates as we have them.
