Many moviegoers would like to forget the 2003 romantic crime comedy Gigli, which starred Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. The movie about Larry Gigli, a bumbling low-level mobster, played by Affleck, and a free-spirited gangster, played by Lopez, was famously one of the biggest box-office-bombs of all time with a $75 million budget that only saw a $7 million return at the theater. Despite all of that, however, it looks like one of the movie’s stars is looking to bring our nightmares to life by advocating for a sequel.
Lopez’s recent appearance on Vogue’s 73 Question video series stirred up the topic of Gigli. Lopez was asked which one of her movies she would like to make a sequel – which, to everyone’s surprise, it was the 2003 box-office flop. The interviewer sarcastically replied, “Critically acclaimed,” prompting laughs from Lopez. If you think about it, it’s not too far-fetched that Lopez would bring the movie up after all these years.
Lopez and Affleck were recently married, and fond memories of the making of Gigli might have been brought up. However, the two did share some screen time with 2004’s Jersey Girl. Unfortunately, the Kevin Smith-written and directed movie were also critically panned, and the movie’s events might make a sequel idea less possible.
Jennifer Lopez’s star power has grown over the years, and 2019’s Hustlers became a hit among audiences and critics. She is set to star alongside Josh Duhamel in this year’s Shotgun Wedding as the actress/singer continues to be in high demand. More than likely, nothing will come of this, but you never know. It seems like studios are looking for any reason to bring back a long-forgotten piece of lousy cinema to a new audience, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
