The original film series of Harry Potter films concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. Of course, Warner Bros has managed to keep the franchise alive with the Fantastic Beasts spin-off series. In recent years, however, the Fantastic Beasts films have become plagued with a number of controversial issues. Now it looks like Warner Bros is reportedly planning to adapt Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in an effort to rebuild the iconic movie franchise.
Fans of the Harry Potter franchise should certainly be familiar with Cursed Child. The name belongs to a play which first premiered in 2016 on London’s West End. The play itself was written by Jack Thorne while J.K. Rowling is credited for the original story penned alongside Thorne and John Tiffany. Specifically, the plot of the play focuses on Harry Potter’s son Albus Severus while furthering the narrative from the original books while including a number of iconic characters. It certainly isn’t difficult to see why Warner Bros would want to adapt such a story for the big screen. In fact, as reported via Puck News, this Cursed Child movie is apparently wanted by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav himself.
And while this should be taken with a grain of salt, it’s worth noting David Zaslav did previously express his desire to work with J.K. Rowling for the future of the film series. And with recent reports that a Harry Potter streaming series could eventually hit HBO Max – it’s clear that Warner Bros has a number of plans in active development. As such, we’ll have to wait and see if a Cursed Child movie comes to fruition and how Warner Bros plans to handle their other projects such as what’s left of the Fantastic Beasts series.
It’s been well over a decade since the last film in the original Harry Potter series. And, at this point, it’s clear that Cursed Child could be the best opportunity for a true continuation. Especially given the nostalgia associated with the franchise’s classic characters. With the current issues behind the Fantastic Beasts franchise so far, it might be the best way to reinvigorate the brand.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on the Harry Potter franchise as we have them. It’s clear that something will be happening at some point soon – it’s only a matter of what and when. Hopefully we’ll have more concrete news from Warner Bros in the near future.
