Many celebrities have been responding to the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk. And, as a result, quite a few have left the platform altogether. This now includes Whoopi Goldberg who claims to have left Twitter because “the place is a mess.”
She said as much while speaking on The View, having claimed that “as of tonight,” she’s “done with Twitter.” One of the biggest reasons for this is that Elon Musk is going to begin charging $8.00 for users to have a blue check verification mark.
As noted below, in addition to the $8.00 charge, she was upset with the way Kathy Griffin was suspended:
“It has been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter, and the place is a mess.”
“He’s putting his $8 charge for blue check verification on hold. First it was going to be $20, now it’s going to be $8. So. He also suspended Kathy Griffin for impersonating him on a parody account.”

Of course, Elon Musk specifically clarified that “impersonation” on Twitter is okay as long as there’s a clarification that it’s being done by a parody account. Kathy Griffin, unfortunately, did not make it clear that she was now acting as a parody account. In fact, she began the impersonation from her own personal account that had the blue check verification mark.
Nevertheless, Whoopi Goldberg did claim that while she’s “going to get out,” that “if it settles down and I feel more comfortable, maybe I’ll come back.” So perhaps we’ll see Whoopi Goldberg and other celebrities return to Twitter once the virtual dust settles on all of this. There’s certainly going to be a lot of backlash when it comes to any kind of acquisition like this. And for Elon Musk, who plans to implement plenty of changes for the social media application, we could be seeing plenty of other strong reactions in the near future. Only time will tell how people eventually adjust to the platform.
