The Indiana Jones film franchise is set to receive its fifth outing later next year. As such, it looks like the Indiana Jones franchise will be expanding in other ways as well. It’s been revealed that Disney Plus is actively developing a new Indiana Jones television series.
As revealed via Variety, “Disney is actively looking to develop an Indiana Jones TV show” with plans for the series to hit Disney Plus. They further explained that the “Mouse House and Lucasfilm have specifically been bringing up the possibility of a streaming show set in the world of the globe trotting archaeologist in general meetings with writers of late.” However, “they are still looking for a writer to take on the project,” which means “no plot details are available.”
Of course, there are still plenty of avenues that such a series could take. This means that it’s “unknown if a series would serve as a prequel to or spinoff of the film franchise, or if it would tie into the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film.” They further explain that a potential series could tie into the new film franchise “similar to how Disney has tied its Marvel shows on Disney+ into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
It’s worth noting that there was a previous Indiana Jones series titled The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles which aired from 1992 to 1993. There were an additional four made-for-TV specials released between 1994 and 1996. Although the series mostly used other actors to portray the titular archaeologist, Harrison Ford did play Indy for one episode. With that in mind, Harrison Ford has stated that the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film will be the last time he plays the character. It’ll be interesting to see, then, what take a new television series might tackle.
As for now, we’ll just have to wait and see what the fifth movie has to offer. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates as we have them. Indiana Jones 5 will hit theaters on June 30, 2023.
