Although the third season of Stargirl is still ongoing, it’s been announced that The CW has canceled the series. While the third season will continue to air on Wednesdays through December 7, there will be no fourth season of the show produced. This comes not long after star Brec Bassinger won Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 2022 Saturn Awards.
As noted via Deadline, this is only the latest series on The CW to come to an end. The network was recently acquired by Nexstar Media and they’ve been cancelling a wide number of hit shows, including The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew. With the third season of Stargirl, however, it appears that the creative team “was given an early indication that this might be the final season and to write an ending that would reflect that.” It was further stated that this “decision is thought to have been made by Nexstar executives.”
Here’s what series creator Geoff Johns had to say about Stargirl being canceled:
“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” Johns said. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built.”
Additionally, star Brec Bassinger shared the following statement in response to the news:
“Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it. I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart.”
We’ll likely continue seeing a number of changes made to The CW as Nexstar Media continues taking control of the network. They’ve previously emphasized their desire to create content that’s either unscripted or geared towards an older audience. As such, it’ll be interesting to see what shows might survive and what the network will greenlight in the future. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them. With Stargirl, however, it looks like fans can expect the third season to completely conclude the series.
The series Stargirl is produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros Television. Geoff Johns serves as showrunner, and executive produces the series with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. While Brec Bassinger plays the titular character, the cast for the show also includes Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy, Alkoya Brunson, Neil Hopkins and Joy Osmanski, with Amy Smart, Luke Wilson, and Joel McHale.
