Although Logan was largely expected to be the final appearance for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, he’ll be returning for the upcoming film Deadpool 3. This was a major announcement that had fans around the world excited at the possibilities. After all, it was already an exciting notion that Deadpool, as played by Ryan Reynolds, would have the opportunity to play around in the MCU. But throwing Hugh Jackman into the mix no doubt increased everyone’s excitement tenfold. Now Hugh Jackman has explained why he decided to return as Wolverine for the upcoming film.
Hugh Jackman recently spoke with Variety, and explained that although Logan was going to be his last time as Wolverine, he changed his mind. Apparently, he’s been wanting to have his team-up film with Deadpool since he saw a screening of the first entry. It was during this screening that he realized their team-up movie could be like “48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy.”
Here’s what Hugh Jackman had to say in full on his return:
“I went to a screening of Deadpool. I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!'” he explains. “All I kept seeing in my head was 48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.”
It’s unknown exactly what direction the new film will be taking. But if 48 Hrs. is used as inspiration, then it seems possible we could be getting a storyline akin to the iconic buddy cop movie. Of course, it’s still a little too early to tell at this point so we’ll just have to see what happens.
Shawn Levy is set to direct Deadpool 3 from a screenplay written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux previously worked on the film’s screenplay.
Fans will be able to see Deadpool 3 in theaters on November 8, 2024. With the film several years away still, fans will sadly have awhile to wait before production gets going. Hopefully, however, additional news will come in soon. It’ll be exciting to see how this fits in with the rest of the MCU following the previous two entries. As such, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them.
