After the success of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the fan-favorite horror film franchise is back in high gear. The highly-anticipated sequel The Nun 2 has officially started filming and, likewise, The Conjuring 4 has officially entered development.
This exciting news comes via THR where they revealed The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It writer Johnson-McGoldrick will be writing the screenplay. In addition, James Wan and Peter Safran will return to produce the new film. The two have previously been involved with every other installment of the film franchise, with James Wan having directed both The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. As such, it’s unknown who might be attached to direct this project, especially given how it’s in the early stages of development. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon.
The Conjuring and its sequels focus on the lives and case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were both real-life paranormal investigators. Ed Warren has been portrayed by Patrick Wilson throughout the film franchise with Lorraine Warren having been portrayed by Vera Farmiga. It’s been stated that “the duo are expected to reprise their roles although no deals are made currently.”
As such, it’s unclear what the storyline for this new film will tackle. But given the extensive library of case files from which to pull inspiration, there are endless possibilities. The franchise has already led to projects surrounding the possessed doll Annabelle and the demon nun Valak from The Nun and its aforementioned sequel. With Johnson-McGoldrick involved with the project, however, there should be no worries that this film won’t live up to the previous entries in the franchise.
The Conjuring became a major hit for New Line Cinema in 2013, and since then, the franchise has grown exponentially. It’s clear that Warner Bros has a great property on their hands with The Conjuring and that they have no intention of letting this cinematic universe fade away.
