The film Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is often considered a highlight of the long-running horror franchise. This is especially due to the incredible performance that actor Ted White gave while portraying Jason Voorhees. Sadly, it’s been revealed that Ted White has died at age 96.
This news, as shared via Convention All Stars owner Sean Clark, states that Ted White “passed away peacefully in his sleep at home.” This is certainly a sad announcement. Ted White left his mark on a number of beloved Hollywood films beyond the Friday the 13th brand. For example, he’s worked on such classics as Creature from the Black Lagoon, Rio Bravo, Planet of the Apes, and Escape from New York to name just a few.
Here’s the full statement shared by Sean Clark:
“As I’m here setting up at Monsterpalooza I just got hit with the news that my dear friend Ted White has passed away. I was told he passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home.”
He continued to describe what it was like working with Ted, noting that he was “hands down the best storyteller you could have ever met.” As such, he mentions that fans check out his book Cast a Giant Shadow which includes many of his personal stories.
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing him and working with him for close to 20 years. He was my adopted grandpa and hands down the best storyteller you could have ever met. If you haven’t read it yet check out his book Cast a Giant Shadow where many of those stories are told. I was honored to be mentioned in the book when he wrote about his time in the convention world. I am going to miss you immensely and those steak dinners we always had. Also teasing you about your red, white & blue banner that made you look like you were running for President.”
Clark finishes by noting that White is survived by his wife Jeri in addition to his sons.
“My heart goes out to his wife Jeri and his sons. It was an absolute honor my friend. Rest easy. Love you Ted.”
Everyone that’s ever met Ted White knows that he was a wonderful human being and always kind to fans. When you consider that in addition to his incredible film career – it’s a great way to remember the beloved actor. In his career he even doubled for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Clark Gable, John Wayne, and Lee Marvin. So, while he’ll be remembered by many horror fans for his iconic performance as Jason Voorhees, he’s certainly had a major impact on many other films and their fans as well. This is sad news but it goes to show just how beloved of an actor and person Ted White was and will remain to be.
