It’s nearly time for Halloween – and that means plenty of horror movie binges. While the free streaming service Tubi offers plenty of different genre titles to choose from, however, the selection can be overwhelming. As such, here’s one wild cult classic horror film that’s definitely worth checking out on Tubi – The Convent. The film was first released in 2000. And, despite its obscure status, it’s actually an impressive example of what can be accomplished with a low budget.
The film follows a group of college students who decide to enter an abandoned convent. Unfortunately for them, however, they uncover a legion of demons that begin possessing the young adults. It’s a gory and humorous throwback to the horror films of the 1980s. With influences ranging from Evil Dead to the Italian horror classic Demons – it’s hard not to find something to enjoy about the film. So, with that in mind, it’s definitely worth giving this horror flick a watch on Tubi.
There aren’t many horror films these days made with this kind of energy. So if you want a nostalgic throwback that’s action-packed, violent, and full of fun then this is a great pick. And considering how obscure it’s become over the years, you probably haven’t seen it yet. And if you have? It’s the perfect time to give it another watch.
Here’s a trailer for the film which teases just how over-the-top and wild this cult classic horror movie can be:
The Convent was directed by Mike Mendez from a screenplay penned by Chaton Anderson. The film was produced by Jed Nolan.
The cast includes horror icons Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Creepshow) and Bill Moseley (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, House of 1000 Corpses). It also includes Joanna Canton, Richard Trapp, and Dax Miller.
After a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2000, it was shelved for several years, being released on home video in December 2002. It’s expected that Synapse will release a Blu-ray of the film at some point in the near future. As for now, however, The Convent is available on Tubi to stream.
