It seems as though there’s always room for a new killer doll to enter the horror genre. Now, excitingly enough, we have another new killer doll from producer James Wan. As fans know, James Wan was the director of The Conjuring which introduced Annabelle to the horror scene. He also directed Saw which introduced Jigsaw’s Billy puppet and the underrated film Dead Silence which similarly utilized killer dolls for its plot. Now he’s returned to produce a new horror film, M3GAN, which features a rather eerie but humorous killer doll on the sci-fi side of things. This is evident in the new trailer for M3GAN shared below.
This new film seems reminiscent of the 2019 remake of Child’s Play, in which a robotic doll becomes a killer due to faulty programming. It appears that something similar happens here – with the titular M3GAN going to great lengths to protect her owner and companion. Of course, with this being an original IP, one can hope that the concept is taken to greater heights this time around.
Here’s the brand-new trailer for M3GAN:
The trailer for the film does come off rather eerily – though it does appear to be having fun with the concept as well. After all, we are living at a time when horror movies are willing to take new risks again and be a little crazier than usual. As such, we’ve seen some pretty bonkers takes with films like Malignant or this year’s Orphan: First Kill. So, with that in mind, M3GAN may very well turn out to be a clever addition to these recent hits.
The new film was directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerward Johnstone from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper. The story for the film was created by Akela Cooper and James Wan.
The cast for the film includes Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten.
M3GAN will be available to see via theaters on January 13, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
