The Marvel Cinematic Universe expanded quite beautifully with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. James Gunn’s space opera helped introduce a new branch of MCU superheroes, many of which have become beloved fan-favorites. This includes Groot, the tree-like alien voiced by Vin Diesel, who just might be getting his own solo movie.
Vin Diesel teased as much in a recent Instagram post. The actor has so far voiced Groot for all of his appearances throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As such, he should be considered a solid source on the subject. As for what a Groot movie would revolve around – it looks like audiences could very well see the alien character return to his home planet. Of course, that depends on whether or not Marvel chooses to develop the Planet X movie that Vin Diesel has alluded to.
Here’s what Vin Diesel specifically stated in his Instagram post:
“So my niece called me and said… thank you uncle Vin for making I Am Groot, haha… the shorts written and directed by the talented Kristin Lepore. It was a blast making, but it’s also a blast watching it with my angels. No wonder Marvel wants to make the Planet X movie.”

Planet X is usually portrayed as the home world of Groot in the comics. If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 ends in the way that’s been teased over the years – then focusing on Groot could be the best way forward. This might allow a new Guardians of the Galaxy team to form, or at the very least, allow Groot some time to heal from whatever tragic events will occur in the third film. Now that Marvel has introduced the concept of Disney Plus specials with Werewolf by Night, we might even see Groot receive that kind of treatment. It all depends on the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and how much people want to see Groot. And, considering how well I Am Groot has been doing, then it seems a movie or an additional spin-off could certainly be in the cards.
