We’re living at a time where video stores are mostly things of the past. The tradition of physically renting movies has mostly been replaced by today’s streaming services. It’s ironic, then, that Netflix – the streaming service that started it all – will soon have a sitcom series focused on a Blockbuster store on the way. The series, appropriately titled Blockbuster, will focus on the brand’s last remaining store as revealed in the new trailer.
As you can see below, the new series is led by Randall Park and Melissa Fumero. The two appear to be quite fitting for their roles, and given their prior acting experiences, they should do a fantastic job here as well. Of course, it remains to be seen how much of an audience there is for a sitcom titled Blockbuster. But given the success of the documentary The Last Blockbuster, which focuses on the real-life store located in Bend, Oregon, then this sitcom actually might be a hit as well.
Here’s the official trailer for Blockbuster:
The trailer appears to utilize the same kind of workplace humor that audiences have come to love with shows like The Office. Furthermore, it appears to be filled with a variety of pop culture references. We’re living at a time where pop culture is more popular than ever thanks to the internet, so having the opportunity to make fun of films like Space Jam: A New Legacy should be interesting to see as teased in the new footage. And who knows? Perhaps we’ll have renewed interest in the video store concept.
In addition to Randall Park and Melissa Fumero, the cast for the series also includes JB Smoove, Olga Merediz, and Madeleine Arthur.
Audiences will be able to stream the upcoming sitcom series Blockbuster via Netflix on November 3, 2022. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
