The Matrix Resurrections recently rebooted the iconic Warner Bros film franchise. Now, following the release of that film, it looks like The Matrix is being reinterpreted as a hip-hop stage performance titled Free Your Mind.
This new stage performance has none other than Academy Award winner Danny Boyle attached to direct. As revealed by Variety, “the Warner Bros. Theater Ventures-licensed project is set to debut next October at Factory International, a new arts venue in Manchester, U.K.” Furthermore, they noted “the production, described as a ‘large-scale immersive performance,’ will serve as the venue’s inaugural show.”
The logline for Free Your Mind further describes the stage performance as a “thrilling journey through ‘The Matrix‘ and into a new realm of possibilities.” As you can read in full below:
“Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, ‘Free Your Mind’ will take audiences on a thrilling journey through ‘The Matrix’ and into a new realm of possibilities.”
The logline then continues:
“This eye-opening production will stretch across the building’s ultra-flexible spaces, responding to them and harnessing the collective energy of the moment.”
This is certainly an interesting announcement. While Danny Boyle has an incredibly varied career, certainly no one expected the director to be attached to a hip-hop stage performance inspired by The Matrix. Then again, after seeing The Matrix Resurrections, it should be completely clear that Warner Bros is willing to do just about anything with the iconic sci-fi property. While we have no updates regarding the possibility of a fifth film in the franchise, this should certainly hold any fans over that were hoping for more content. As always, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
The music for Free Your Mind will be composed by Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante. Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy will act as choreographer. In addition, Danny Boyle’s longtime collaborator Tracey Seaward will produce. Factory International commissioned the stage play which is being written by poet playwright Sabrina Mahfouz. Artist Es Devlin will provide large scale sculptures.
Free Your Mind will be available to see at Factory International, located in Manchester, U.K., next year in October 2023.
