The LGBTQ+ romcom Bros has finally been released. Unfortunately, the film has been somewhat of a failure at the box office despite support from critics. In fact, the film has a rather massively positive reception which includes a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. With that said, due to the low box office, Bros star and co-writer Billy Eichner is blaming “straight people” as the cause.
In addition, he had plenty of positive things to say about the film. For example, Eichner explained that he “snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater playing BROS in LA.” During this screening, he claims “the audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out.” He goes on to say that the experience was “truly magical” and that he’s “VERY proud of this movie.” Although this was soon followed by his complaints that the film failed because “that’s just the world we live in” due to “straight people” not showing up for the film.
Here’s what Billy Eichner had to say about Bros and the box office results of the film so far:
Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater playing BROS in LA. The audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out. It was truly magical. Really. I am VERY proud of this movie.

The other tweets read:
“Rolling Stone already has ‘Bros’ on the list of the best comedies of the 21st century. What’s also true is that at one point a theater chain called Universal [the studio behind the movie] and said they were pulling the trailer because of the gay content. (Uni convinced them not to). America, f–k yeah, etc etc.”
“That’s just the world we live in, unfortunately. Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for ‘Bros.’ And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.”
With all that in mind, it’s possible that positive word-of-mouth could save Bros at the box office. After all, that could develop an all-new sense of hype for the new theatrical film and drive more potential viewers to theaters. Otherwise, Bros might not be destined to be a hit at the box office. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Bros was directed by Nicholas Stoller from a screenplay he co-wrote with Billy Eichner.
The cast includes Billy Eichner, Harvey Fierstein, Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, Guillermo Díaz, Guy Branum, Amanda Bearse, Jim Rash, and Bowen Yang.
The film Bros is currently playing in United States theaters. Meanwhile, It will be released in most international markets throughout October and November.
