The Scream franchise abruptly roared back to life with the release of the fifth film, titled Scream, earlier this year. The new sequel led to the greenlight for Scream 6, the next sequel in the fan-favorite film series. And, while we wait for that film to hit theaters early next year, it looks like there could still be more entries on the horizon. Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who’s also producing the sixth film, recently opened up about the franchise’s future.
As revealed while speaking with Collider, he thinks the franchise “can go on” even after this sixth installment. He also explained why this would be so much easier with Scream as opposed to other franchises like Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street. Because with Scream, he explains, “Ghostface changes with every movie.” This allows them more opportunities for future Scream installments.
Here’s what he had to say:
“Now [I do think it can go on]. I’ve been proven wrong repeatedly. Since this last one was such a pleasure… I also think one of the wonderful things about Scream is that there’s a different killer in every film. There’s [Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, or Freddy Krueger], they don’t go away. And Ghostface changes with every movie, so we have an opportunity to change the motive, change the story, and we can always twist and turn it since it [the original Scream] was always meant to be a game-changer.”
Of course, we still don’t know how the Scream franchise will change with the release of Scream 6. The film could already be opening up new avenues to explore, or depending on the narrative, it could be more conclusive. But with new killers in each installment – it wouldn’t be too hard to come up with another killing spree. As such, we’ll just have to see what happens going forward. But Kevin Williamson certainly seems hopeful about the future of the film franchise.
The highly-anticipated sequel Scream 6 was directed by 2022 Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence. James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick also returned to write the screenplay. Scream creator Kevin Williamson executive produced alongside Radio Silence member Chad Villella. Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre of Spyglass were also attached as executive producers.
Fans will be able to see Scream 6 in theaters on March 31, 2023.
