Netflix typically removes certain movies or shows off of its streaming platform – and while it’s an annoyance for some users, it’s ultimately not that big of a deal, as you can typically find the show or movie on another platform. The latest decision, however, is a little more surprising, as it looks like Netflix will be removing an original series.
When Netflix was first getting into the creation of their own original projects, they produced the horror series Hemlock Grove. Although it only lasted three seasons, the series managed to generate a cult following. Unfortunately, it’s now been revealed that the show will be removed.
As of this writing, via SlashFilm, a reason for the show’s removal has yet to be given. However, it’s currently scheduled to be removed from the streaming platform on October 22, 2022. This means fans will be able to watch it one last time for the Halloween season before it’s taken off the app.
The first season of Hemlock Grove first premiered on April 19, 2013. It was based on the novel of the same name by Brian McGreevy. And, following its initial success, the series received a second season on July 11, 2014. This was followed by the third and final season on October 23, 2015. So, after seven years of the entire series being available to stream on Netflix, it will be removed.
Hemlock Grove was produced by horror filmmaker Eli Roth while being developed by Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman. It took place in the fictional town Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania and followed characters including the Godfrey family. When the series first premiered, it was announced by Netflix after the opening weekend that “Hemlock Grove was viewed by more members globally in its first weekend than House of Cards.”
This decision comes not long after HBO Max began similarly cleaning up their catalogue. Many animated shows and movies were removed or outright cancelled by the much newer streaming service. It’s possible that Netflix is attempting a similar strategy. Of course, unless an official statement is released by Netflix, it will remain unclear why the decision was made for removing this fan-favorite series. We might even see Netflix begin removing other such projects from their platform in the future.
