The new Netflix series Dahmer, aka Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been released. With the popularity of true crime as a genre, it’s clear that plenty of people have been tuning into the series. Especially when you consider American Horror Story star Evan Peters and creator Ryan Murphy are both involved with the series. In light of this, however, there is some backlash against the Dahmer series. Many internet users are bringing up that the real victims of Jeffrey Dahmer should be respected.
It’s worth noting that Jeffrey Dahmer killed at least 17 men between 1978 and 1991. Despite this, however, the way Evan Peters portrays Jeffrey Dahmer has earned most of the attention. And, in order to remind fans that they shouldn’t glamorize Jeffrey Dahmer, they want to point out that we should remember the victims.
As you can see below:
#DahmerNetflix is out, let’s not romanticize Jeffrey Dahmer just because he is played by Evan Peters.
Remember the victims.

The same Twitter user also noted that, while “it’s okay to praise Evan Peters for his performance,” because “he is a brilliant actor,” they give a quick warning. “DO NOT ROMANTICIZE HIM,” they wrote, “IN THE ROLE AS JEFFREY DAHMER.”
It’s okay to praise Evan Peters for his performance, he is a brilliant actor. BUT DO NOT ROMANTICIZE HIM IN THE ROLE AS JEFFREY DAHMER. #DahmerNetflix

Other users have shared similar statements in order to send “love & support to the families & friends of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims.”
I’m not telling anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is huge rn, but if you’re actually curious about the victims, my family (the Isbell’s) are pissed about this show. It’s retraumatizing over and over again, and for what? How many movies/shows/documentaries do we need? https://t.co/CRQjXWAvjx

Sending love & support to the families & friends of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims.
Jeffrey Dahmer targeted mainly Black & Brown men/boys. His victims came from inner cities, & a lot did sex work too.
& Because of this.. Jeffrey Dahmer knew most people wouldn’t care. pic.twitter.com/iTpsePZkDl

Of course, everyone involved with Dahmer so far including Evan Peters and Ryan Murphy have established their desire to remain respectful of the victims. Unfortunately, as happens with these things, people will take them out of context and romanticize the wrong things. Let’s just hope that as many people as possible can still take the time to respect and honor the victims.
In addition to the inclusion of Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer, the cast of Dahmer also includes Niecy Nash, Penelope Ann Miller, Shaun J. Brown, Colin Ford, and Richard Jenkins.
The new biographical series Dahmer is currently available to stream on Netflix. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
