Queen Elizabeth II has died at age 96.
Buckingham Palace has announced that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the Royal Estate in Balmoral. She was the UK’s longest reigning monarch, having ruled for the past seventy years, with the majority of Britain having known no other ruler.
The statement released by Buckingham Palace reads:
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
In recent weeks, the Queen had cancelled a number of engagements due to what had been described as ‘mobility issues’. She had also spent a brief spell in hospital last year due to an unspecified issue. Earlier today, the Queen had reportedly been placed under medical supervision at her Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle, as doctors were concerned over her health.
It was as handwritten notes began to be handed around MP’s in the House Of Commons, as the new Prime Minister Liz Truss debated her plans to battle the looming energy crisis, that it became clear that something was very amiss. Not long after this, key members of the royal family including Prince Charles and both of his sons were reported to be making their way to the Royal Estate in Scotland to be by the Queen’s side.
With the death last year of her husband, Prince Phillip, a process of handing many of her duties on to other members of the Royal Household had slowly come into being. The Queen came to the throne in 1952.
